MOT and road tax

Never miss a fleet MOT or road tax renewal again

VCT checks every van, car and truck on your fleet with DVLA and DVSA every night. You get a reminder before an MOT or road tax runs out, and a clear list of what needs booking this month.

Nightly checks

Every vehicle checked with DVLA and DVSA, every night

Each night VCT looks up every vehicle's road tax with DVLA and its MOT, or HGV annual test, with DVSA. The dates on your fleet list come from the source, so nobody has to type them in or keep them up to date.

  • Recheck one vehicle or the whole fleet at any time, for example after a test
  • Anything due in the next 30 days shows in the Due soon view
  • The Action centre tells you how many vehicles are road legal: taxed, with a valid MOT
  • Add vehicles one at a time or import a CSV, with a preview of exactly what will change before anything is saved

How it works

From registration number to reminder

  1. Add your vehicles. Type in the registrations or import your existing list. VCT looks each one up with DVLA and DVSA straight away.
  2. VCT checks them every night. Road tax status and due date from DVLA, MOT or annual test expiry and history from DVSA.
  3. You hear about it in time. At 30 days a vehicle moves into Due soon. Reminder emails go out before the date, and the weekly round-up lists everything that's due.
  4. The renewal stops the reminders. Once a vehicle passes its MOT or is taxed, the next check picks up the new date and it drops off the list. Text reminders are skipped as soon as a renewal is recorded.

Reminders

MOT and tax reminders that reach the right people

A reminder only helps if someone sees it. VCT gives you a few ways to keep dates in front of the people who book the tests and pay the tax.

  • Reminder emails before an MOT or road tax runs out
  • A weekly round-up for admins and managers, on the day you choose
  • A calendar feed with MOT and tax dates in Outlook, Google or Apple Calendar
  • Text reminders as an add-on: £10 a month for up to 200 texts, sent between 8am and 8pm
MOT history

The full DVSA MOT history on every vehicle

Each vehicle page shows every MOT test DVSA holds for it, the same data you'd see on the check MOT history service. VCT picks out the advisories worth watching and shows the mileage at each test.

  • Every pass and fail, with the date and test result
  • Advisories worth acting on, for example a tyre near the legal limit
  • Mileage at each test and average annual use
  • Service records and costs kept on the same page

Your whole fleet

Vans, cars, trucks and staff cars in one list

VCT treats each kind of vehicle the way you'd expect, so the reminders you get are the ones that matter.

  • Vans and cars: MOT and road tax checked every night
  • HGVs: annual test results read from DVSA the same way as van MOTs. See HGV fleet compliance for the details and limits
  • SORN vehicles: counted as off the road, they don't count against you and don't get reminders
  • Grey fleet: staff cars used for work show business insurance expiry next to company vehicles, and drivers can add their own car. More on grey fleet compliance
Why it matters

What a missed MOT can cost

Gov.uk is clear: you can be fined up to £1,000 for driving without a valid MOT. Once the MOT has run out, the vehicle can't be driven or parked on the road, apart from going to a pre-booked test or to be repaired. For a business, that's a fine plus a van stuck in the yard and a job that doesn't get done.

Missed MOTs usually come down to where the date was kept: a spreadsheet or a whiteboard, watched by one person who happened to be on holiday. If a company van has already slipped through, our guide on what to do about a company van with no MOT covers the next steps.

VCT or a spreadsheet?

A spreadsheet is free and works for a handful of vehicles if one person keeps it up to date. It doesn't know when a van has been taxed, failed its MOT or been declared SORN, and it won't remind anyone unless they open it. VCT gets those dates from DVLA and DVSA every night and tells you before they run out. We've set out the trade-offs honestly in VCT vs spreadsheets. Our guide to tracking MOT and tax dates across a fleet compares every option.

Plain English. VCT reads MOT and road tax data from DVLA and DVSA. It isn't approved or endorsed by either, and it helps you stay on top of renewals. Booking the test and paying the tax is still down to you.

Questions

Fleet MOT and tax reminder FAQs

How often does VCT check MOT and road tax?

Every night. VCT checks each vehicle's road tax with DVLA and its MOT or HGV annual test with DVSA. Admins can also recheck one vehicle or the whole fleet at any time.

When do the reminders start?

A vehicle moves into Due soon 30 days before its MOT or road tax runs out. VCT sends reminder emails before the date, and the weekly round-up lists everything that's due.

Can I check the MOT and tax for my whole fleet at once?

Yes. Import a CSV of your registrations, check the preview of what will change, and VCT looks up every vehicle with DVLA and DVSA. After that you can recheck the whole fleet whenever you like.

Do you send text message reminders?

Yes, as an add-on. It costs £10 a month for up to 200 texts. Texts go out between 8am and 8pm and are skipped when a renewal is already recorded.

Does it work for HGVs?

Yes. VCT reads HGV annual test results from DVSA the same way as van MOTs, and checks road tax with DVLA. DVSA's heavy-vehicle test history starts in 2018, and a new HGV's first annual test is due 12 months after registration.

How much does it cost?

£3.50 per vehicle a month, falling to £2.50 per vehicle for bigger fleets (minimum £35 a month), ex VAT. Monthly, with no contract. MOT and tax checks, reminder emails and the weekly round-up are all included.
